Stargazing in the City
The University of Toronto is home to many wonderful things. Two such things are located in the domes on the roof of its McLennan Physical Laboratories building (right there in the picture).
These two large half spheres contain super advance telescopes used by the university staff to conduct research. Although they are dated, they are still powerful enough to see as far as Saturn!
That's right! On this date, you will take your significant other to use one of these large telescopes to look at the Saturn and the stars!
Every first Thursday of the month the astronomy department hosts a special night where they open their doors to the public for a free astronomy lecture, a show at the planetarium, and a look through the telescope.
Located at 60 St. George Street, around Spadina and College, the area is ripe for an incredible date experience! Here is your itinerary for the date!
The Itinerary:
1. Meet at Kensington Market for drinks.
2. Head over to the University for the Astro Tour.
- Address and How to get here: 60 St. George Street...
- What you need to know: The experience starts at 9:00pm so get here about 20 minutes early as you will need to get a seat in the lecture hall and line up for tickets to the planetarium. Spots fill up fast, and it's on a first come first serve basis. Check their website for more information.
- The Lecture: The lecture lasts about an hour and is on the topic chosen by the staff. I greatly enjoyed learning about the universe, although I did think the lecture was a tad too long. My partner, on the other hand, is of the feeling that you can skip it altogether. If you are not in a lecture hall type mood, then we suggest you stay at Kensington longer and head over to the University for about 20 to 10:00pm.
- Good Will Hunting: an interesting fact is that Good Will Hunting was shot in this location, and you can actually visit the lecture hall and the hallway scene from the movie (see pics below)! Ask the staff for more information if you would like to visit these spaces.
- Planetarium Show: after the show, if you got the ticket in time, you can head over for the show.
- The Main Attraction: take the elevator to the 13th floor, climb the two set of stairs, and enter the room that houses the telescope. We recommend that you get here right after the lecture as a line up tends to form.
- Rooftop Views: before leaving, making sure to go out on the roof to take in the spectacular view and take pictures of the downtown Toronto skyline you cannot get anywhere else - the perfect place to hold your date in your arms while you enjoy the view (and try for a kiss ;)!. There are additional telescopes here that you can as well (make sure to ask the staff).
